SINGAPORE

A City that Never Sleeps!

EXPLORE

The best way to get to know Singapore is by immersing yourself in the culture and the experiences that define the city.

I suggest starting with Singapore Flyer to get a grasp of your surroundings. Getting your bearings and your head around this city is important, as the hive of activity around town can be daunting even for city dwelling Sydney-siders. Singapore Flyer also gives you the opportunity to take those key happy snaps of the skyline, so you can get that all important postcard style photo.

Now explore the wide array of ethnic enclaves. Wander off around Little India, exploring the number of alley and back lanes, which give you a glimpse of local life. Or explore the huge Chinatown, which mixes modern clubs and bars among local stores and stalls.

For Motorheads like me, the best time to visit Singapore is during the Formula One. This is precisely the occasion where the city seems to explode with light and sound. In fact, they say that Singapore install 1000 reserve generators alone to power the light systems that illuminate the track at night.

FOOD

The best way to explore Singapore is in its food. With its rich multicultural heritage, Singapore truly is a melting pot of flavours and cuisine. You have your obvious influences from the Chinese, Malay and Indian; to the Western influences and Peranakan. Whether it be the many Hawker food site scattered all over the city or intimate restaurants, your taste buds will cheer as flavour snap, crackles and pops in your mouth with every gobbfull!

3 Places I suggest you visit:

  1. Swa Garden Restaurant, 540 Macpherson Road: Swa Garden Restaurant generally serves dishes from the Chinese TeoChew Province. This Cuisine generally relies of the Freshness and Quality of ingredients for flavour. This Traditional style Restaurant has apparently been around for decades and seems to be the place to go for many of my Chinese friends, who agree this is the place to go to get their TeoChew fix.
  2. Immigrants: The Singapore Gastro Bar, 467 Joo Chiat Road: This establishment offers Tapas style Singaporean heritage dishes. Think bite sized sharing plates for you and a significant other allowing you to grasp the bitter, sweet, salty and sour flavours of Singapore.
  3. Restaurant Barakath, 11 Dalhousie Lane: This place is Found in the Little India Precinct, and for me was the place I got to taste the rich and heavily spiced nature of North and South Indian Cuisine.
